Weert Jacobsen-Kramer

The GERMAN OCEAN RACING TEAM is a German managed campaign for the 14th edition of the VOLVO OCEAN RACE. The VOLVO OCEAN RACE is the most important offshore sailing event in the world and a unique human adventure. It connects all continents and economic regions in a fascinating competition and represents a global business platform that offers its stakeholders unequalled business and marketing opportunities.

The Race

"There is nothing like it. It gets in your blood and you can't get rid of it."
Sir Peter Blake

The VOLVO OCEAN RACE  is the world’s longest professional sporting event and the most important offshore race. It connects all continents and economic regions in a fascinating sailing competition and represents a global business platform that offers its stakeholders unequalled business and marketing opportunities. The race is well established since 1973 as one of the big three global sailing events in the world and has provided the ultimate test of a team, a pure adventure like no other. Since the first race, the boats have become faster, the crews are professional sailors at the top of their game, and the technology is state of the art. However the sea never changes and the race around the world is still a human challenge and a battle against and with the elements.

Next Decade

“The Volvo Ocean Race has always been the ultimate test of a team in professional sport and with these changes we are taking it up another level."
Mark Turner

From the edition after 2017-18, the VOLVO OCEAN RACE will be contested in a combination of a 60-foot foil-assisted monohull for the ocean legs and a 32-50 foot ‘flying’ catamaran for use in the In-Port Race Series. Together, they will establish the VOLVO OCEAN RACE as sailing’s ultimate all-round test and strengthen its reputation as the ultimate test of a team in professional sport. Furthermore the race will strengthen its historic connection with the Southern Ocean and the tradition of racing around the world, while boosting its commercial offering to sponsors and Host Cities, by introducing radical changes to the racecourse, stopover formats and timing of future race activity in every year.

In addition the VOLVO OCEAN RACE has launched a major Sustainability Programme for the 2017-18 edition and beyond, signing partnerships with 11th Hour Racing, AkzoNobel and United Nations Environment, while outlining a series of commitments that focus on ocean health. The race has three pillars of action on sustainability - reduce its own footprint, maximise its impact using its global communications platform, and leave a positive legacy wherever it goes. Centred on a partnership with the United Nations Environment Clean Seas campaign, for the 2017-18 edition the focus will be on the call to action ‘Turn the Tide on Plastic’.
